Sri Lankan Attraction Galle Fort

Galle Fort

Galle Fort, commonly known as the Galle Dutch Fort, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in Galle, on Sri Lanka's southwestern coast. It is a well-preserved fortified structure that highlights the country's colonial heritage and architectural splendor.

Galle Fort has an interesting and rich history. The Portuguese erected the fort in the late 16th century, and it was later enlarged and strengthened by the Dutch in the 17th century before being seized by the British. Because of its strategic location, the fort became a major trade port for merchants and adventurers.

The architecture of the fort is a mix of European and Asian elements, representing the region's numerous colonial empires. The fortress walls, bastions, and ramparts are designed in the Dutch style.
