Buduruwagala Temple, located close to Wellawaya in Sri Lanka's Uva Province, is an ancient Buddhist temple famous for its massive rock carvings. Buduruwagala means "the rock with the Buddha statue" literally, and the center piece is a colossal 16-meter-tall statue of Buddha the tallest rock-carved Buddha statue in Sri Lanka. Six small statues believed to be of Bodhisattvas and other gods can be seen around it and were made on one side of a cliff dating back to the 9th or 10th century. The peaceful forest landscape and religious atmosphere make Buduruwagala a peaceful and devotional place where one can explore the island's ancient history.
