You will find many historical temples in Tissamaharama and among them stands out the Tissamaharama Raja Maha Vihara which has been built after the visit of Arhath Mahinda Thero, who brought Buddhism to Sri Lanka from India. Tissamaharama Raja Maha Vihara is considered as a sacred place visited by Lord Buddha with 500 monks who had reached to the enlightenment. Today it has become a sacred Buddhist temple of local devotees and a top attraction in Tissamaharamaya among tourists. Tissa dagabo is one of the top highlights of the temple.
One of southern Sri Lanka's most important Buddhist temples, the ancient site is said to have been visited by Lord Buddha himself. The temple complex, which includes its giant stupa (Tissa Dagoba), serene atmosphere, and ancient relics, offers a cultural and religious experience. Pilgrims pray here daily in large groups, and tourists are able to hear about Sri Lanka's long Buddhist past.
