Declared as a UNESCO World Heritage site, Sigiriya Lion rock fortress is an ancient fortress built on top of a tall column of rock. Built by King Kashyapa as a place to hide from his brother, who was the true heir to the throne, after murdering his father to take the throne. With incredible wall murals, water gardens, landscapes and all the facilities and comforts that you could ask for during the time, the fortress is still a mystery even to the modern-day engineers.  There have been amazingly irrigated water sprinklers and well-irrigated cooling systems for the king’s comfort. Climb the hundreds of steps to the top of the fortress, and you will see a panoramic scenery of a lifetime.

Dambulla Rock Cave Temple or Dambulla golden temple is one of the oldest cave temples in Sri Lanka. Build-in a natural cave complex, the history of the temple runs back to 1st century B.C. The temple has five caves. Among them are the three main caves; Cave of the Divine King, Cave of the Great Kings, and Great New Monastery. The main caves are decorated with stunning wall murals and has over 100 of Buddha statues of different sizes and styles. Located on a top of a rock, the temple also offers you beautiful scenery of the surrounding landscapes which will take your breath away.

Kandalama Tank or Kandalama Lake is a water reservoir situated near Kandalama which was built by king Vasabha. Used to irrigate the lands from Kandalama to Kekirawa, the reservoir has made with a huge dam which raises up to 21m in height and 1600m long. Kandalama tank was created with a dam across the tributary of Kala wewa, Mirisagoniya river. Offering you a mind-blowing sceneries of the lake and its surrounding greenery, the area sets the perfect ambience to enjoy a relaxing evening watching the setting sun at the horizon.

Though it became popular very recently among young travellers, the rock has a great history that runs back to 2nd century B.C. Being a monastery of Buddhist monks during the King Kashyapa’s era it is believed that King Kashyapa built the monastery for the monks who lived in Sigiriya rock fortress as he needed the Sigiriya rock for himself to build his fortress. Today, Pidurangala is one of the most popular hiking trails in Sri Lanka. Although the path to the top is not easy, you will witness a million-dollar scenery at the summit with the Sigiriya Rock in the background.
