Situated in Aluvihare, Matale district, Aluvihara rock cave temple has been built by king Dewanampiyatissa with the rise of the Buddhism in Sri Lanka. It belongs to the 3rd century AD. The temple is an important religious place in the Sri Lankan Buddhism history as Pāli Canon was written for the first time in the world Aluvihare Rock cave temple. According to the folklore, 'Alu' or 'Aloka' means 'light' in Sinhala language, translating the name of the temple to English as ‘temple of light’.
