Sri Lankan Attraction Guard stone (Muragala)

Guard stone (Muragala)

Mura Gala or Guard stone was an essential feature of the ancient Sri Lankan architecture. Carved out of stone, a Mura gala was placed in either side of the stairs at the entrance of religious places. This tradition dates back to 1st century AD. It has been reported that this feature has been made of wood as well in the past. Usually the muragala consists an image of a drawf and a cobra with seven heads and has served the purpose of a wedge for the slant stone railing of the stairs.
