Belong to the Polonnaruwa era, Lotus pond is one of the significant ancient ponds in Sri Lankan history due to its shape. As its name suggests, the pond is shaped like a bloomed lotus flower and showcases how well the ancient designers have combined irrigation with architecture to create functional and aesthetically appealing irrigation creations. This structure was only recently discovered as this situates in a very remote area in Polonnaruwa. There are eight rounds of petals in the lotus and each petal has been used as a step to get down to the pond. The modern landmark in Colombo, Nelum Pokuna has inspired from the shape of this pond. Though lotus pond is very small in size, you must visit Lotus pond if you love seeing ancient ruins.
