Being a sacred place in Sri Lanka that dates back to Polonnaruwa kingdom, Vatadageya is believed to build as place the Tooth Relic of Lord Buddha. Some tales state that this structure was built to hold the alms bowl of the Lord Buddha. A Vatadage is a structure built to protect a small stupa from natural causes like rain, sunrays, wind, and storms. There is only a handful of similar constructions in Sri Lanka, and Polonnaruwa Vatadage is one of the oldest among them. There are ruins of 03 entrances to Polonnaruwa Vatadage, and it is believed that there had been a wooden roof for this structure in the past. Polonnaruwa Vatadage is one of the incredible historical monument that showcases amazing architectural skills of ancient Sri Lankan architects.
