Located in the ancient city of Polonnaruwa, the second kingdom of Sri Lanka, Avukana Buddha Statue is a standing statue which has been carved from a huge granite stone. The 42 feet tall statue is gigantic and showcases the devotion of the ancient civilization of the island to Buddhism. Carved in the 5th century, the statue represents the Abhaya mudra, and it is one of the best examples to show the abilities of the Sri Lankans‘ stone working skills and creativity. The best example for this is the delicate folds of the robe of Lord Buddha that have made similar to life like.
