Being a world-famous site situated in Anuradhapura Isurumuniya Rock Temple is known for the stone carving of the “Isurumuni Lovers”. Carved in the Indian Guptha style, lovers in the sculpture is a real couple who lived in the past. This is according to folklore. Some say that this is the son of king Dutugemunu who left his right to the throne of the Anuradhapura Kingdom for a girl from a low caste. Though this temple was constructed by the king Dewanampiyathissa, the history of the temple runs back to 5000 years, and it is said the great king Rawana was born here.
