Built by Aggabodhi I (564 – 598 AD), Medirigiriya Vatadageya is another historical site situated in Polonnaruwa. Made with both bricks and stones, the structure of Medirigiriya Vatadage has been built to protect the small stupa inside the structure. This is one of the seven similar structures in the island, and the entire structure has been built on stone pillars. This masterpiece was abandoned after the invasion of Kalinga Maga, and it was discovered in recent time. It is believed that this place has been crowded with monks in the past. The two large ponds, the hospital, toilets, and the medicinal boat provides the proof for it. If you go see this masterpiece you can't help but leave the place in awe seeing the architectural brilliance of ancient Sri Lanka
