Sri Lankan Attraction Moonstone

Moonstone

Moonstone or the 'Sandakada Pahana' is an architectural element in ancient Sri Lankan architecture. A moonstone is a semi-circle shaped stone with pictures of animal pictures carved on it. Moonstone is used at the entrance of religious and royal buildings and believed to serve the purpose of a rug. Elephants, horses, lions and bulls were used in the carvings; however, the bull was removed from the moonstone with the influence of Hindu culture in Sri Lanka. Moonstone was first used in the Anuradhapura era, and can be seen in every period throughout the Sri Lankan history. This is indeed a magnificent creation of ancient architectures that shows the attention to details.
