Sri Maha Bodhi (Bo) Tree or Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi is a sacred fig tree situated in Mahamewna Garden, Anuradhapura. It was planted in 288 BC and is considered to be one of the oldest human-planted trees in the world. Sri Maha Bodhi is an important holy tree for Sri Lankan Buddhists as it is the right shoot of the mother tree that Lord Buddha to attain enlightenment under. Today, hundreds of devotees flock around this sacred tree to worship with flower offerings and to perform the Bodhi watering ritual. Being a world-famous site situated in Anuradhapura Isurumuniya Rock Temple is known for the stone carving of the “Isurumuni Lovers”. Carved in the Indian Guptha style, lovers in the sculpture is a real couple who lived in the past. This is according to folklore. Some say that this is the son of king Dutugemunu who left his right to the throne of the Anuradhapura Kingdom for a girl from a low caste. Though this temple was constructed by the king Dewanampiyathissa, the history of the temple runs back to 5000 years, and it is said the great king Rawana was born here.
